Okay so you could call me brave for posting before pictures of my horrible space and you could say what will people think you after seeing this. Well First things first I can admit I have hoarding tendencies but in the same sentence I can tell you when I start organizing a space I don't have a problem throwing things away, giving things away or selling things. I have three spaces in my house well on our property that are horrible, a hutch room upstairs that has become a junk room, our shed in our back yard and then the space I chose the Garage. I chose the garage because of the three spaces that are dissorganized and full up yuck and junk this space is the space that we really need to be functional right now.
We live in Texas so it isn't snowing all the time but because we have warm days and cold nights we end up with frost on our cars or ice on the windows and it is not fair to my husband that we have a perfectly nice garage but he can't park his car in it. So without further wait the horrible pictures. Also I have written down my plan of attack and I am putting it down at the bottom under the pictures.
Okay here it is my horiible space and among all of this junk and clutter are three couches, a queen size bed, and a coffee table. Oh yes and also a lounge chair and a dryer. There is also an assortment of kids clothes that they have outgrown and a lot of recycle this is a problem because we get one recycle bin and if it doesn't fit with the lid closed then they won't take it so the recycle is from birthday's and christmas. Okay look below to see my plan of attack.
Plan of Attack
1. The function of this space is going to be to store our cars and to have a small locker/mudroom type area, and then two stand up cabinets with plastic bins for storage of extra school supplies, extra cleaning supplies, party supplies and other things that I can't think of now.
2. I plan on trying to sell most of the larger items in hopes of funding this organizing project. I am going to try to sell the three couches, dryer, coffee table, bed and chair. I have much more junk I will put in the bulk pick up next week.
3. Things this space needs well it is a finished garage but there is no paint so I am planning on painting it just white or cream. But I also plan of adding a chalkboard space for the kids to use in the summer or on rainy days. I don't have any storage so i will have to buy the cabinets and I am going to try to make the locker/ mud room area.
4. What do I need to change about myself to keep this from happening in this space again. Well first I have to keep up with the house work because this all happend because my house would be a disaster and people would be comming over and so I would run around the house with a bag, a box or basket and fill it up and throw it into the garage. Second I have a horrible love for cute baskets and containers and things I really don't need. I just need to make sure that I am very focused on my purchases and have a use for them before I buy them.
5. My budget is very small maybe $50 could be more if I can sell some of the furniture, but if it doesn't sell pretty quickly I will just be donating it so to have it out of my house or free cycling it.
6. My timeline is that I am going to commit to 30 minutes per day out there, on the weekends I am hoping to get an hour if I can. If the kids will let me and also if the weather will permit. Since I live in Texas and it has been 73 degrees the past couple of days I am hoping for a few more of those days so I can really get moving. Also we have 29 days to do it which I think will be so great because I have cleaned my garage 2 or 3 times before but I have just done it in a weekend and I think doing it more slowly and really purging stuff will help me to keep it the way it needs to be. Also I would like to have it done by them because my sons birthday is the 28th and I want to have his birthday party the next week and we could really use the space.
To everyone who is jumping in and joining us on this journey I hope it is a great journey for you I know we will have such a sense of peace after this part of our journey is done.
Good luck this month!
ReplyDeleteHi Amber! looks like you have - like me - a lot to do this month! Good luck! I´m sure we will manage :)
ReplyDeleteGreetings from germany, Julia
Your garage looks like mine used to -- I'd stand at the kitchen door and pitch crap in because I was too afraid of the black widows to step one toe in there. Now it's half clean (my husband got a new car so he was motivated to clear enough room to park.)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for the chalkboard area! Looking forward to seeing your progress.
Good luck; those pictures look so familiar! Been there, done that. :-} You have a good plan. I always felt that 1/3 of the work was figuring out what to do first. :) Way to go!
